Expanding Audio Education Pedagogy: The inclusion of experimental electronic music creation practice in commercial audio production training at the classroom and program level
This paper provides an argument for a link between the training methods of electroacoustic composers and recording engineers. The evolution of audio education training over the last five generations is described and a distinction is made between music technology and audio production programs, including basic curriculum and program objectives. The specific instructional methods used in each will be identified and compared, including experimental techniques compared with commercial recording instructional methods like sound-a-like projects, microphone shootouts and iterative feedback loops in mixing. Specific course projects for use in the classroom including learning objectives, sample instructions and grading rubrics will be provided in addition to guidance for the unification of creative and technical pedagogy in modern music technology and audio production programs.
