Expanding in Reverse: Rediscovering Predecessors in an Electronic Music History Course
The study of history in music technology is traditionally based on strictly electronic music from the Western canon.  But strong historical relationships exist between music that uses electronics and earlier music driven by older technologies.  Reframing the definition of “technology” inspired the expanding of a typical electronic music history course into one that now integrates the contributions of pre-electronic artists and tools.  This has introduced students to a much greater historical continuity and a wider range of artists, inventors and tools.
