Professor Kurtz holds undergraduate degrees in linguistics and music, and a master’s in sound recording from McGill University. He has worked as a recording engineer for the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts as well as the Banff Centre for the Arts in Banff, Alberta. From 1998-2000, Justin held the position of music technologist at the University of Ottawa, teaching courses in acoustics and music technology. In 2001, Justin relocated to New England to teach at the Hartt School in the department of music production and technology. His company, Laurel Hill Recording, specializes in classical and acoustic music. His clients have included the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Noah Baerman, Archangel Voices, The Irrelevants, Cuatro Puntos, and Avery Ensemble. His projects have appeared on the Naxos, Albany, Innova, Toccata Classics, Divine Art, and New World record labels. His research interests include stereo microphone techniques and technical ear training methods.
